The fire rating on the Republic RG-42E is a 2-hour fire rating tested at temperatures up to 1400 degrees F. A heat-activated expandable intumescent door seal is designed to keep out smoke and water.
The burglar protection on the RG-42 far exceeds California Department of Justice Regulatory Standards for Residential Security Containers. It has 4-way boltwork with 14 - 1 1⁄2" active chrome-plated steel live locking bolts. This gives you coverage on all four sides of the door and protects against pry attacks. Behind the lock is a drill/ballistic resistant armored ball-bearing hard plate to protect the lock from drill/punch attacks. There is also an active spring-loaded re-locker as well. Additional security is the 1/4" solid steel plate added to the entire door for pry bar resistance. All of these features together make this safe pretty difficult to attack.
Hollon did not skimp on the fit and finish. The outside is painted with a textured charcoal finish and an upgraded chrome-plated package. Inside is ultra-plush, fully adjustable interior gun racking and one full-length top shelf reinforced with steel beams for maximum weight capacity. The top shelf is designed to accommodate long guns. There are also three removable and adjustable small shelves for additional organization. A door organizer comes standard to help keep your interior clutter-free.

What a difference a hinge makes!
Hollon Safe uses our own design solid steel hinge. These cost roughly 500% more than an industry standard hinge used by our competition. Seems crazy right? We don’t think so because we want our customers to have decades of trouble free use of their safe. Our vault hinges on our gun safes are “NO SAG HINGES” and this takes much more steel to produce.
Lesser quality hinges are much smaller and often use “hinge cap” to make the smaller hinge look larger and more secure. How do you know if the gun safe you are looking at uses a hinge cap? Easy, it will be adjustable and no sign of being welded onto the front of the safe. It will look too perfect due to the use of epoxy to hold it into place. The adjustable feature is also needed because it’s only a matter of time before it sags. Then the door will begin to stick and it will be hard to open and close. You may even need to lift up on the handle to get it to open. These are better than internal hinges which won’t let the door open completely.
Some competitors use internal hinges. These are also something to be aware of when shopping around. I suggest you open the door and place your hand on the hinge and follow it around to the inside. You will notice there is no fireproofing where the hinges are attached. So if a chain is only as strong as its weakest link…here is the weakness. Those companies will often say stuff like “that is why it is only 75 minute fire rated and not 90 minutes.” Which sounds good but it just doesn’t work that way in a fire.
